How to solve 05 Ford F150 4.6L "check gauges not warning lights and no limp mode"?

2005 F150 XLT
4.6L, 4wd
209k miles

Symptom:
Truck starts and drives. At idle no issues, temp comes up and at the center temp mark the stat opens, recently installed a new stat and radiator. Highway speed the temp gauge spikes to max and I get a message to check gauges not warning lights and no limp mode. Pullover and idle temp goes down, and stays down unless I get up to higher speeds again. Nothing out of the ordinary with reservoir level, no mixing with oil.

Advice on how to do:
A device plugged into the OBDII which will display the temperature for engine coolant, engine head, transmission fluid, etc. A lot of people are downloading software online and buying an adapter. Some people buy very expensive tools like shops and dealerships use.

You need to be able to read the truck's computer. You want to see what the temperature is for your coolant, and compare that with a point and shoot thermometer.
When the needle on the dashboard is high, pull over and start checking the temperature. Check the temperature at the cylinder head, thermostat, and the hoses. See if the fan is turning on. Look at the water pump.

With this generation of trucks, the cooling system was not that complicated.

The thermostat opens to allow hot coolant out of the engine. If this does not work, the truck overheats.

The hot coolant travels through the upper radiator hose to the radiator. Airflow cools the fluid. At highway speeds, airflow is simply from your truck traveling so fast that air is flowing in through the grill. At lower speeds, the cooling is assisted by the fan. The cool fluid goes back to the engine through the lower radiator hose. The water pump keeps this cycle going.

Since we know that at low speed, the truck is not overheating, we can believe that the thermostat is opening, the fan is working, and the water pump is doing its job. Now to figure out if the truck is actually overheating at highway speed. The needle on the dash is rising because the car's computer is reading a high-temperature signal. So check to see what temperature the computer is reading. Now check to see what the actual temperatures are. Your truck may not be overheating at all. If the water pump, fan clutch, or thermostat failed, you would overheat at low speed. While you are working on your cooling system, it doesn't hurt to replace the belts & hoses, and pressure tests the system. While you are at it, I would exchange the radiator fluid. Flush out the system and start with a new coolant.

How to upgrade Ford VCM2 firmware?

This article is available with the Ford VCM2 firmware update procedure.

1. Press the power button on the Ford VCM2 scan tool main unit

2. Long-press on the power button, supply VCM2 with power, wait for all 4 indicators turn on, then release the button. Then use the USB cable to connect VCM2 with the computer.

3. Enable the network connection, then check if the VCM2 establishes good communication with computer.

3. Open IDS software and software will prompt to update the firmware. Wait the update procedure is done.

4. Restart the computer when the firmware update is finished. Plug VCM2 kit to the vehicle to start diagnosing or programming functions.

How to turn on 2018 Jaguar XE R-Sport electric folding wing mirrors?

My Dad picked up his new 2018 Jaguar XE R-Sport at the end of last month and he loves it. Unfortunately, the event was tainted by discovering upon collection that the car did not have a couple of features that he was expecting. Anyhow, I'm not here to point the finger but wanted to double-check something with regards to electric folding wing mirrors (the car doesn't appear to have them).

Try any of the following suggestions:
1. have a look in the vehicle’s settings via the touch screen, it may just be turned off.

2. If they are electrically adjustable:- On the driver's door, press L & R mirror buttons simultaneously - they should both fold. Ditto when locking the car. (Assuming it was specified when ordering the car!).

3. On Jaguar's UK web site, the most basic arrangement appears to be: "Exterior Mirrors in Body Color, Electrically Adjustable, Heated, with Clear Side Turn Indicators".
Power fold seems to be an option on some cars, at least.

4. There are differences with the mirrors, the power fold version has an auto-dimming function to match the rearview mirror. Jaguar will never allow you to just approach them and retrofit an item that wasn't specified by the original owner at the time of build/purchase.

You'll notice an XE that has power fold option, just look at the driver's side switch pack and you'll see a small white door mirror symbol with arrows pointing to the two mirror buttons. If that isn't visible, then there is no power fold.

It's a £295 option on the spec list.

Therefore, one question " having power fold mirrors will be more than a software update, new mirrors would be required as well?"
The answer is:
New mirrors, door modules and programming by someone with access to SDD or if 18MY or newer they’ll need to have the more expensive pathfinder equipment. Also would need double-checking if the wiring is in place in the doors.

Look at pathfinder equipment:
Named: V157 JLR DOIP VCI with SDD and Pathfinder.
Online programming is OKAY.

Preferred OBD II scanner for Benz CLK-Class (W209)

Using experience on the preferred OBD II scanner for Benz CLK-Class (W209).

Recommendation on a scanner to purchase:
1. The "best" is SDS (MBZ's Star Diagnosis System). You can get a Chinese "clone" version of it for around $500 including a used Dell laptop.
For a less expensive and less complex option, look at the iCarsfot i980 or MBII, or the Autel MD802 Elite.

2. As for the scanner, I have not used the i980, but many on the forums have and it gets good reviews. I think the MBII is slightly more capable and easier to use, but the i980 should do what you want. Another one I hear really good things about is the Autel MD802 Elite - it even works on other cars besides MBZ which might be a bonus.

3. thank you for the information Bob! I did wind up contacting iCarsoft and they stated NONE of their devices will recalibrate the air suspension and offer changing the ride height values. Oh well, on to checking out Autel and Foxwell (those under $400). Foxwell NT530 Benz scanner states theirs does and its $150-$200, but hard to find that information documented specifically.

4. Just get SDS - you can buy a turnkey system with (used) laptop for well under $500.

5. I have the iCarsoft MB II, and it works great. It can be used as a standard OBD2 scanner for any OBD2 vehicle, and can do some extra stuff for Mercedes vehicles. I used it to troubleshoot an ESP issue on my E350, and was able to verify that the steering angle sensor was working fine, and instead of that the problem was simply the brake pedal switch. iCarsoft MB II can't do nearly as much as SDS, but for the price and as a diagnostic tool, it's well worth it IMO.
